Situated in Hermosa Beach on a large corner lot at the intersection with 14th street, 1326 Owosso Avenue was constructed in the 1980s and is notable for being the former home of musician Greg Ginn and artist Ray Pettibon as well as being the birthplace of legendary punk rock band Black Flag.
The house has ocean views from the second floor and from the third floor roof deck. The beach is a short walk or bike ride away as are well-regarded Hermosa Beach elementary, middle and high schools. The existing house could be creatively rehabilitated and re-purposed as a spacious contemporary beach house or replaced with an entirely new building.
The renders and plans shown here are of a scheme designed by architect Dan Brill. The sleek, contemporary building is sited on an east-west axis to make the most of the 100’ lot dimension. The result is a house that is exceptionally wide, not just for Hermosa Beach, but also for Los Angeles.
The first floor of the new design features glass walls, which retract to connect the 25' x 40’ great room with an external courtyard and 40’ long swimming pool. The enclosed courtyard would also serve to cool the interior of the building during summer months.
The second floor of the building would accommodate a master bedroom with 600sf roof deck and ocean views. In addition there could be 3 further bedrooms and a quiet study space with roof deck access. The staircase would be top-lit via a glazed slot in the roof, which would also serve to illuminate the large wall space, designed specifically for large art works
Dan Brill is an American architect who attended the Royal College of Art in London and practiced architecture in the UK for 20 years before moving back to California; the photos below given an impression of the high quality of his built work.
Brill’s aesthetic is best described in his own words; ‘we design beautiful modern buildings with an emphasis on simplicity, pragmatism, and clarity of concept. Our projects are characterized by clean lines but they are also practical and enjoyable to use’.
